State Senator Jason Plummer (R-Edwardsville) released the below statement following the passage of Senate Bill 689, legislation that limits local control in libraries throughout Illinois.
“Yet again, the Democratic super majority is attempting to strengthen their ability to push extreme ideology on Illinois citizens, by stripping away local control from locally elected library boards. Duly elected library boards, chosen by the members of the communities they serve, can and do carry out their obligation to increase literacy in their communities without a book-ban agenda foisted on them by Chicago politicians. I opposed this ridiculous legislation, just as I opposed attempts to strip curriculum decisions from school boards and efforts to take zoning powers away from county boards. I will continue to defend freedom of speech and advocate for local control here at home.”
